Steps on repairing dented window screens

Correct unsightly dented or damaged window screens

What you’ll find is that most screens which have a dent in them tend to be made out of aluminum. Aluminum window screens have Screen Window Repairwhat we call a “memory”. Meaning when enough pressure is applied to the screen (like a soccer ball bouncing off the window, an accidental hand print or flying branches from a wild storm) the aluminum, although very strong, does not bounce back into its original shape. There are other screen materials which are found in some Boston homes today that don’t have a memory. However, there is a trade off as these materials aren’t as durable.

Here’s an example of what you can do to fix a dented aluminum window screen:

  1. You need to reseat the wire mesh within the frame. First, remove the window screen from the master frame. Some screens are removed differently so consult your manufacturer’s guidelines or owner’s manual for a proper removal.
  2. Find a sturdy, flat working surface.
  3. Near where the dent is located on the screen, you will want to remove the spline holding the window screen in place. To remove the spline, insert a flat-head screwdriver underneath the spline in the groove. I would recommend replacing the spline even though it may look reusable.
  4. Repeat Step 3 for the two perpendicular sides of the frame. Do not remove the fourth side of screen spline.
  5. Pull the loosened screen taut across the frame to remove the dent. You can use tape to temporarily secure the screen to the frame or place a “heavy item” such as a jug of water in the center of the screen to hold it in place.Repair screen windows
  6. You will want to reinstall the new spline opposite of the 4th side of the frame by pressing it back into the groove at one corner.
  7. Use a window screen rolling tool (or spline tool) to install the spline securely into the grooved track along the window screen frame.
  8. Repeat step 7 to the other two sides of the frame making sure the screen is kept taut during the repair process.
  9. You may need to trim some excess after you have repaired the window screen. To do this, use a sharp utility knife to carefully trim the excess screen making sure not to puncture or cut the spline or main screen area.

Repairing Windows With Seal Failure

Let’s discuss how to detect window seal failure, the difference between seal failure and condensation and possible prevention of costly window repairs

Seal FailureRepairing Windows with seal failure is most commonly known as Foggy Window Syndrome (Well, I’m coining that phrase). Windows don’t last forever and eventually need repairs. Roofing and siding materials have some of the longest-lasting warranties as far as home improvement materials go. They are assured to last for decades. Some roofing materials are warranted for 50 years (and of course if you’re talking about Rite Window warranties, they also have windows warranted for 50 years).
Windows are subjected to the same elements, yet they are more delicately manufactured than other weather-proof home improvement materials. After all, we’re dealing with multiple window parts and pieces. These items can break down rather frequently and window repairs are a must.

It’s not uncommon for a house to have at least one window with a failed seal. Here’s an easy way to know if you have a seal failure or condensation build up. First, try to clean the inside and outside glass of your window or patio door.Seal failure in window and patio doors If you wipe an excessive amount of moisture off the inside of your glass this may not be a problem with your window. Rather excessive moisture on the inside of the window glass can be the cause of high humidity levels inside your home. Humidity is caused by a number of factors within your home. Every activity that uses water contributes to adding moisture to the air (gas furnaces, humidifiers, showers, ovens, dishwashers and washing machines.) If you have higher than normal humidity levels inside your home, you’ll want to look for suggestions on correcting this issue as other silent but major potential problems are lurking rather than just repairing your windows.

If you clean the windows and the fog persists, then the moisture has found its way in between the panes of glass due to a seal failure. Your window repairs can be accomplished by having a proper replacement of the glass pack. Glass packs come in different energy efficient levels. Window glass packages can have Low-E, or low-emissivity, coatings which is applied to the glass and help reflect heat. The most common gas injected in between the panes of glass is argon gas to further increase the energy efficiency of the window. A seal failure, though, will “oxidize” the low-E coating and argon gas, making the glass appear foggy. It is an involved process to replace the low-E coating and argon gas. This should be done at the manufacturing plant. Knowing the proper window parts to change the window glass pack for a perfect window repair job can be tricky and you may want to consult a Window Repair Expert for their service.

Understanding Window Seal Failure

Home window repairs and window seal failureTypically, older wooden double-pane windows consist of two panes of glass held together with just caulking. Because of the glass expanding and contracting due to the weather, the seal would often fail and create moisture build-up in the windows.

High-quality replacement windows now typically use a glazing bead with some sort of spacer that helps hold the glass in place. These components help the window parts moves with the glass and possibly eliminate seal failure and your need to repair the window.

If the window is not equipped with a glazing bead, it’s likely the sash was constructed or assembled around the glass. If this is the case, it can be very difficult or altogether impossible to replace the glass by yourself. Hiring a Window Repair Expert in Boston can help fix this problem at a relative economical cost.

A Window Repair Expert should be certified to perform repairs in your home

Certifications and credibility are important when selecting a company to fix your windows

Fact: The home improvement industry is one of the only industries where you do not need a college degree to stamp yourself as an “expert”. Just because someone says they’re an expert at repairing windows, usually isn’t the case. So, how do you protect one of your biggest investments without being taken for a ride? I hope some of this information helps when considering hiring a Window Repair Expert to work in your home.

Is the company Lead Safe Certified?Rite Window EPA/RRP Certification

On April 22, 2008 the Government passed a law stating that any contractor working on any home in the U.S. which was built 1978 and prior must be Lead Safe Certified and perform the proper techniques for Lead Safe Renovations. This goes for any contractor working on any part of your home, including window repairs. I know you’re thinking if you can show that you don’t have lead in your home then you can save on the expense of having a Lead Safe Renovation performed. To date, there are no reliable do-it-yourself test kits which can definitively state whether or not you have lead based paint in your home. Only a certified lead abatement specialist can tell you if you have lead in your home. A word of caution: if you decide to have a lead abatement specialist visit and they determine you have lead in your home; no work can be done by anyone without the proper Lead Safe Certification documentation (otherwise any fines incurred are the responsibility of the homeowner).

Industry CertificationAWDI Certified Window Repair Expert

AWDI stands for the American Window and Door Institute. The AWDI program is not just a “test it and forget it” certification. In order to be certified you need to adhere to the 5 major components of the program:

  1. Regulated training and/or demonstrable field experience
  2. Required on-going skill improvement
  3. Industry consensus accepted installation guidelines
  4. Field testing/observance of individual installer’s skills
  5. Standardized manufacturer’s installation instructions

All of our Window Repair Experts are AWDI certified to perform window repair or replacements for homeowners throughout greater Boston.

Worker’s Compensation & Insurance

Be sure to ask for an insurance certificate. Most reputable contractors will have a Worker’s Compensation policy as part of their company’s insurance plans. If you’re hiring a Window Repair Expert, ask to be named on the certificate. The insurance company will send you a certificate with your name on it. This will protect you from any damage that the contractor might do to your home during the job. The truth of the matter is many small contractors HAVE NO INSURANCE. They either can’t afford it, or they can’t get it. True, your homeowner’s policy will protect you to a degree, but even if it covers a claim, your carrier will recover the loss amount with higher premiums for you, and could even cancel your policy. Some serious Worker’s Compensation claims can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, often exceeding the limits on your policy, leaving you holding the difference.

Credibility through referencesGuild Quality Referrals

When you ask a company for some references you may get a nice printed list of people’s names with a blurb about their experience. How do you know those are actual testimonials from customers? Wouldn’t you like to see a reference about company that is controlled by the homeowner through a third party source who double-checks the accuracy of the claims? Angie’s List is a good reference tool where you can find local references about companies. This is a site where all testimonials are given by homeowners who’ve had work done on their homes. The reference can only be given by the actual homeowner because not only does Angie’s List employees check these references for their validity, homeowners pay to have access to the Angie’s List website so they can see ratings given to Window Repair Experts and other companies performing home improvements. When you sign up and pay to have access to their site, you agree to Angie’s List terms. These terms are strict, but helps enforce giving a “true” referral.

The golden standard of the Better Business BureauBetter Business Bureau Accredited Business

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is the traditional standard for checking a company’s credibility. It still holds true today. However, be aware that each BBB is independently owned and a company may have their BBB ratings held in the original state from where the company was born.

Repairing Windows is being GREEN

Being green doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg when it comes to repairing your windows

The energy associated with the manufacture and installation of new replacement windows, could be much greater than for the repair of existing windows. An old wood or vinyl window sometimes can be repaired by simply adding an aluminum storm window Repair Storm Windowsto the outside giving you more energy efficiency while protecting your prime window from the elements. It is also possible to only replace the glass package that is held in each individual sash, versus the whole window. This can be an effective way of increasing your energy efficiency with the modern technology of argon gas, krypton gas and Low-E coatings. By repairing the original wooden or vinyl window sashes instead of the whole window frame, you’ve created less overall landfill and disposal costs.

There are arguments on statistics collected regarding energy efficiency data for insulated windows and repairing original windows. According to the some analyst’s data, if an aluminum storm window is installed outside of an old window and energy saving blinds are on the inside, efficiency can be around 12-15 percent less than for an insulated replacement window. However, there are many other factors in homes that contribute to loss of energy besides windows and this data may not be accurate for all New England homes.

Windows with locks and mechanisms rusting and corroding due to homes being located along the coast don’t necessarily need a replacement window application either. Most reputable Window Repair Experts have the buying power to purchase coastal hardware kits to help fight against the salt strewn air which can cause windows to break down sooner over time.

You may experience a window that has noticeable wood rot and doesn’t operate smoothly. The rotting wood can be repaired or replaced depending on the extent of the weather damage. In addition, I have heard from homeowners who have window sash problems that shake, rattle, stick, fall, don’t lock, don’t open, don’t close, and are drafty. However, these problems may be only a quick window adjustment away to get them back into tip top working shape.

Furthermore, preserving and repairing original windows is not always the right option. For instance, the cost and effort to repair unique windows – such as an antique wavy glass – can be extremely high. Also, insulated windows are far superior for blocking noise and UV protection.

Of course, in the end, it’s the customer’s decision and not the Window Repair Expert or Window Replacement Specialist. We’re here to help homeowners of Boston recognize that repairing your windows is a green alternative to replacing your windows.

Fix Drafty Windows in Your Home

Fixing drafty windows can be complicated or simple depending on the extent of the window repair needed. If you live in an older home, you may be aware of obvious air and/or moisture seeping into your home due to the windows breaking down over time. However, some newer homes have what we call “Builder-Grade” windows and are susceptible to the same problems as older homes because the lower quality windows can’t hold up over time. In either situation, there are solutions to fixing drafty windows.

When fixing drafty windows on a budget, you will want to become your own little “Sherlock Holmes” and look at the entire problem before you take any action. How many windows are in need of repairs? Are you having problems on one side of the house due to prevailing winds? Would repairing the windows in the bedrooms make more sense versus repairing all the windows at once? By reviewing the entire problem first, you will be able to make smart decisions on either repairing or replacing your windows.

Weather-stripping in Window Sashes

Quick Tips

Weather-stripping can be purchased from your local hardware store to quickly fix drafty windows. However, it may be difficult to remove and re-apply the weather-stripping if you don’t know where the leaks are entering the home. I don’t recommend the plastic film kits for a many reasons. Wrapping your windows in plastic may look unsightly and deter from your view; you may have a bigger problem if you need to wrap all of your windows in plastic; you could have problems removing the plastic kit once it is applied and stuck to the surface for months on end (especially during the long New England winter months). While removing the plastic window kit you may take off some paint or even pieces of wood trim around the window due to the plastic adhesion taking hold for a long period of time.

If you find that you have bigger window problems besides some minor drafty windows, you might have to resort to permanent measures. Contacting a Window Repair Expert can help you diagnose the problem and, in most instances, fix your drafty windows right there on the spot.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Windows?

Here are 4 important factors to help with your decision.

Many of our customers want to know: Should I attempt to repair my windows or does the cost of replacing them outweigh the value of the repairs? The short answer is it depends on your situation. Of course there are a lot of variables and every home is unique. Let’s look at some of the important factors that will determine the right direction for you and your home:

  • Current Condition of Your Windows
  • Extent of Potential Window Repairs
  • Level of Exposure to Weather
  • Cost Comparison to Repair or Replace Your Windows

Let me first start out by saying Window Repair Expert will recommend window repairs as another option to replacing your windows. We are able to repair your windows when the majority is still in good condition or in other words, when only parts of the windows aren’t working properly. Of course, there are occasions when too much of the window is damaged and replacing it is the best option. That is when we would refer you to our parent division of Rite Window and recommend you schedule a time to receive a price quote for getting the windows replaced.

For those homeowners who have wood windows I’m going to state the obvious…Wood rots. As soon as a manufacturer removes bark from a tree, the wood begins to decompose. Bark is the natural and best defense against Mother Nature. New England has a variety of weather conditions from extreme cold and heat to high humidity and very dry air depending on the season (let alone the time of day). All unprotected wood will eventually rot under those conditions. If your windows are experiencing any forms of wood rot, it needs to be completely removed to stop from spreading to other parts of the window or house walls.

I want to illustrate the potential damage weather can do to your windows if you don’t take care of the problem:

Once wood rot is detected, a Window Repair Expert completely removes the rotten pieces of the window by using tools and techniques specifically designed for window work. Most people will look at a window with wood rot and assume the whole thing needs to be replaced. This is sometimes not the case. There are many parts and pieces of a window. Frequently, we replace old window parts with newer pieces that will NEVER rot.  In other cases we must use wood to replace the existing piece, like when repairing window sashes. If only a small amount of repairs need to be completed, then the value of having window repairs done in your home may be the best choice. The biggest advantage to this is obviously the money savings, depending on how much work needs to be done.

If you wonder why some parts of your windows are still fine and other parts fail, it’s because of the level of exposure to the elements and various materials used to create the parts for your windows breakdown differently over time. There will be differences in the way everything from the sun to horizontal snow and sleet hits the window. In addition, water is a tricky element. It can roll down the side and drain off the window sill, or find its way into the unprotected crevices of your window frame. I have seen windows getting soaked by an automatic sprinkler that was intended for a flower box mounted beneath a window. Every time the flowers got watered the window suffered. Watering your flowers is good; watering your windows is bad.

There are so many more things that you need to know about repairing windows that I could never cover it all in one article. However, I want to point out that weighing the cost of whether to repair or replace your windows is key. If you’re not sure, then give the Window Repair Expert a call. We don’t do plumbing, or electrical work. We are knowledgeable in the field of replacement windows and window repairs ONLY. It’s all we do, everyday.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Fill out the form to the right with your contact information. (We do not sell or give your contact information to anyone. We hate spam as much as you do and promise never to inundate you with useless mail or emails.)
  2. Include a brief description of your window or patio door problems.
